Museum of the Bible Celebrates First Anniversary with Festivities, Prepares to Welcome Millionth Visitor
WASHINGTON, Nov. 15, 2018—To commemorate its first anniversary, Museum of the Bible invites the public to a variety of free festivities held throughout the weekend, including special children’s activities, giveaways and unique photo opportunities. In its inaugural year, the 430,000-square-foot museum has welcomed more than 995,000 guests, hosted more than 3,727 group tours and held 15 speakers-series events featuring renowned biblical scholars and other experts for members of the public interested in more in-depth discussion related to the Bible.
“We have much to celebrate as nearly 1 million people from around the world have come to experience this one-of-a-kind museum aimed at inviting all people to engage with the Bible,” said the museum’s new CEO Ken McKenzie. “In the year ahead, we look forward to welcoming new and returning guests to engage with the history, narrative and impact of the most influential book ever written.”
In its first year, the museum opened numerous temporary exhibits, three still open for museum guests to visit: Jerusalem and Rome: Culture in Context in the First Century CE, which presents a selection of archeological remains from Israel in the first century CE and was made possible by the Institute of Archeology of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem; Pilgrim Preacher: Billy Graham, the Bible, and the Challenges of the Modern World, which provides a historical examination of the life, work and cultural significance of William Franklin “Billy” Graham Jr. (1918 – 2018), made possible with the cooperation of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association and The Billy Graham Library; and the Wiedmann Bible, which explores a unique visual narrative of a Christian Bible by German artist Willy Wiedmann.
The museum comprises eight floors, including expansive exhibit and gallery space, temporary exhibit space, a restaurant and biblical garden, a performing arts theater, a grand ballroom, and event space. In addition to permanent exhibits on its three floors focused on the history, narrative and impact of the Bible, Museum of the Bible invites international institutions to introduce guests to biblical, cultural and literary treasures found in their renowned collections through temporary exhibitions.
Museum of the Bible is located at 400 4th Street SW, just two blocks from the National Mall, and is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Visitors can obtain tickets to the museum by visiting museumoftheBible.org/tickets.
