WASHINGTON D.C. – Fifteen months from the highly-anticipated grand opening of the Museum of the Bible in November 2017, just two blocks from the National Mall in Washington D.C., the institution is well underway taking its vast collection of biblical artifacts and academic resources on the road. The museum is announcing additional exhibit tour stops as well as academic events and lecture series to meet public demand, showcasing unique presentations at each location.
The Sacra Pagina exhibit (Latin for “The Sacred Page”), will be making tour stops at Cairn University in Langhorne, PA (Sept 18 - Oct. 16) and the Biblical Life Institute in Freeport, PA (Oct. 19 - Nov. 3). This exhibit explores how people, both in and out of the academic community, approach and study the Bible, examining how an interdisciplinary approach is essential to understanding the text’s many different aspects and themes.
Earlier this summer (July 25-30th) at the International Congress of Coptic Studies at Claremont Graduate University in California, the Museum’s Legacy of Christian Egypt exhibit detailed how early Christian scribes, in combination with the preserving sands and dry climate of Egypt, left behind some of the world’s oldest surviving biblical manuscripts and texts.
The museum also recently co-sponsored the Yad Vashem Christian Leadership Conference in Washington D.C. (August 18-21st). In cooperation with Yad Vashem, the world’s center for documentation, research, education and commemoration of the Holocaust, the conference included several staff members of Yad Vashem presenting various lectures including “A World Without Holocaust Survivors.” The two organizations also signed a formal agreement to strengthen commemoration and education efforts across the world.
Additionally, the Museum of the Bible will be launching a 7-week, fall lecture series at Oklahoma Christian University entitled, Presidential Influence: The Importance of the Bible Among America’s Greatest Leaders. On September 1st, New York Times best-selling author, public policy Fellow at William Jessup University and Researcher/Writer for Museum of the Bible, Joshua Charles will kick of the series by exploring the Bible’s influence on the 16th President of the United States, Abraham Lincoln.
Yet another of the institution’s offerings, The Voyage of a Book exhibit began showing to the public July 7th of this year and will be an ongoing exhibit located at The Ark Encounter in Williamstown, Kentucky. Through an immersive setting, this exhibit shows the geographical spread of the Bible by exploring personal stories paired with biblical artifacts.
Beyond domestic showings, the Museum’s exhibits have already traveled around the world. Stops include two separate appearances at Vatican City’s Braccio di Carlo Magno; the Havana Cathedral in Havana, Cuba; the Pontifical Catholic University in Buenos Aires, Argentina; the Lichthof of the Ulmer Museum in Ulm, Germany; and The Bible Lands Museum in Jerusalem.
“It’s a busy time at the Museum of the Bible and we are proud to have been invited to showcase these marvelous exhibits, lecture series, and academic conferences all around the world and throughout the US,” says Cary Summers, president of The Museum of the Bible. “While we all look forward with great anticipation to the grand opening of the Museum next year in Washington D.C., that’s only part of our institutional mission. Through academic research, educational initiatives, traveling exhibits and the Museum itself, we seek, through many different means, to engage all people with the Bible.”
