Mothers in the Bible

Eunice, Lois, Hannah, Rachel, Salome, Bathsheba, Rahab, Rebekah, Jochebed, Sarah, Elisabeth, and Mary, perhaps the most famous mother that ever existed! Beginning with Eve, in Genesis said to be “the mother of all living things”--mothers hold an important role in the Bible.

The word “mother” or “mothers” appears in the Bible hundreds of times—even the word “mother-in-law." Literally from A to Z—from Abigail to Zipporah—there are more than 84 mothers mentioned by name in the Old Testament alone. And many in the New Testament—attesting to the importance the Bible places on motherhood!

As you engage with the Bible, you discover many of the mothers mentioned in the Bible present qualities that all of us, male or female, parent or not, can strive to emulate in a celebration of Mother’s Day!
