The Bible in American Football

From legendary greats like Vince Lombardi to more recent football stars like Mike Singletary and Ray Lewis, the Bible has been an influence in American football. Mark Richt, in his career as an NCAA Division 1 football coach, often cited the book of Proverbs. He said: “If anyone would take the challenge of reading a proverb a day—you’re going to get wiser. It’s good stuff.”

Winning championships was important to Mark Richt, but he looked to the Bible for “true inspiration” in his role as a coach. He said: “I just want to do things in a way that I think God would be pleased with me. I know if I do that, I’m blessing the players I’m in charge of.”
