John Wooden: Living the “Love Chapter”

For legendary UCLA basketball coach John Wooden, the Bible was a major influence in his life, one that impacted not only sports but people from every walk of his life.
He wrote in his autobiography: “My father read to us from the Bible every day when I was growing up,” a practice Wooden continued into college and throughout his life.

One of his favorite Bible chapters was 1 Corinthians 13, known by many as the “Love Chapter.” It underscored not only Wooden’s iconic coaching style, but his family relationships and the way he treated team members.

“If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love,
I am only a resounding gong or a clanging symbol.”
