Maundy Thursday--the solemn celebration of the Last Supper, the Communion of bread and wine by Christians in remembrance of Jesus’ death on the Cross—commemorated during Holy Week.
For some it includes observing a traditional Passover Seder meal and for others the ceremony of foot-washing in an act of humility, following Jesus’ example to his disciples in that final week of Jesus’ life.
In an unprecedented foot-washing ceremony this past year, Pope Francis washed the feet of women for the first time during a Maundy Thursday visit to a prison in Rome—kneeling down in front of 12 inmates—six men and six women—to wash, dry, and kiss their feet in a clear demonstration of humility.
He said, “the ceremony was an expression of Christ’s openness to serving and loving all people. . .”
