“Lest You Forget”— International Holocaust Day

On January 27, the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, DC, commemorates International Holocaust Remembrance Day—marking the 1945 liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp survivors. It was established in 2005 to encourage a worldwide awareness of the approximately six million Jews killed during World War II—to promote Holocaust education around the world.

The museum is one of the world’s leading centers for research and education connected to the Holocaust. Prominently placed in the museum are the words from Deuteronomy 4:9: “Only guard yourself and guard your soul carefully, lest you forget the things your eyes saw, and lest these things depart your heart all the days of your life, and you shall make them known to your children, and to your children’s children.”
