Inclusive Design and Accessibility

Museum of the Bible is committed to providing our visitors with a museum experience that is accessible for all ages and abilities.

Access to Museum

Parking

Parking can be limited in Washington, D.C. which is why we suggest taking the Metro and exiting at the Federal Center SW Metro Station (see the “M” on the map below). It is a short, one-block walk west to the front of the museum.

If you need parking, please reserve parking before you arrive using the Parking Panda app.

Accessible Drop-Off

Museum of the Bible’s wheelchair accessible drop-off point is on 3rd street at the main entrance to the museum.

Just look for the 40’ bronze doors on the west-end of the building. The museum entrance is accessible to persons using wheeled devices or for those who prefer not using stairs.

Support Persons

Museum admission is free but must be reserved in advance. Please ensure any support persons you require for your visit have a timed, free admission ticket that coincides with your entry time.

Service Animals

Service animals are welcome at Museum of the Bible.

Getting Around the Museum

There are four elevators near the Grand Stairwell that provide access to each floor, and each lift provides a unique experience while riding between levels.

The Accessible Experience

The Museum of the Bible has developed brand-new technology to provide our accessible visitors a refreshing set of solutions. The information below outlines our roadmap for both hearing and visually impaired persons.

We provide a “digital guide" for each visitor requiring ADA support. The digital guide provides personalization (through custom tour creation), navigation (point-to-point navigation) and accessibility. The following focuses on how it provides accessibility options to our visitors.

Hearing Impaired

As hearing-impaired persons traverse the museum, the digital guide provides the following:

  • Transcripts – When visitors enter galleries and sub-galleries, content appears on-screen in transcript format for the hearing impaired.
  • New Assistive Listening Technology - All digital guides and those using them can be located with our indoor navigation technology. There are “fences” throughout the museum to that detect when users enter. An FM station is tuned in and that simulcast the nearby content to the digital guides with adjustable volume to assist people in hearing the content or experience. When they exit the “fence,” location tracking is stopped. This enhances existing FM ADA solutions because we can use many more frequencies in smaller space since there isn’t a need to consider bleed over from other transmitters on a single channel.
  • Open Captioning - All videos throughout the museum and on the digital guide use open captioning.

Visually Impaired

For visually-impaired persons who visit the museum, the digital guide provides the following:

  • TalkBack Gestures – The app supports Android’s TalkBack gestures, so visitors can use Android’s familiar gestures to interact with the app.
  • TalkBack Gestures on Maps – Guests can interact with the maps using TalkBack gesturing. As users interact, the areas are read aloud back to the user for interaction.
  • Maps as a List – Because of the new indoor navigation technology we’ve developed, we are able to know exactly where each visitor is located within the museum. At certain levels of visual impairment, maps become useless. We’ve developed location-aware “maps as a list” functionality in which the map displays as a list and is location-aware. Using TalkBack functionality, the device reads off the areas of interest nearby, so the user can select which area they want to learn about.
  • Audio Descriptions – The World Stage Theater will provide audio descriptions for live performances. The roadmap will be available to provide audio descriptions for all theaters and live performances throughout the museum by the end of 2018.

Other ADA Features

  • Wheelchair-Preferred Navigation – For the museum’s wheelchair/wheeled visitors, we have preferred pathing when navigating between elements of the tour. This pathing ensures the shortest route and bypasses any areas with stairs or small steps.
