"A General's Prayer" Brings George Washington's Untold Story to Museum of the Bible's World Stage Theater
WASHINGTON, D.C., May 27, 2026 — To celebrate America’s 250th anniversary, Museum of the Bible’s World Stage Theater will premiere A General's Prayer, a play that brings audiences into the private world of General George Washington during the darkest days of the American Revolution. It follows him through moments of doubt, struggle and resolve as he works to hold together a fragile army and a nation not yet born.
Starring James Denton, best known from eight seasons as Mike Delfino on Desperate Housewives and the long-running series Good Witch, A General's Prayer is a one-man play written by Dean Batali (That '70s Show, Buffy the Vampire Slayer) and directed by Andrew Borba. The production runs June 12 through July 19 at the World Stage Theater. The 70-minute production is set in a winter encampment and draws inspiration from the famous “Prayer at Valley Forge” painting currently on display at Museum of the Bible.
"As America turns 250, A General's Prayer invites us to ask the question that history so often skips: What drove the people who built this country?" said Matthias Walther, chief marketing officer at Museum of the Bible. "Washington's story and that of his fellow founding fathers cannot be separated from the biblical foundation that shaped him."
General Washington was known to thank “divine Providence” for his victories in life and on the battlefield. He led early revolutionaries through numerous military victories and later led the young America as its first president.
“The idea that George Washington might have ever wondered if there would even be a nation to pray for some day is not a story most people have considered,” said playwright Dean Batali. “This play presents the man behind the legend and examines Washington’s humanity, humor, and faith as he wrestles with the realities of war, and his hopes for the future.”
