Maundy Thursday, March 17
Christ and his disciple in the Garden of Gethsemane, Antonio Tempesta and Leonardo Parasole
Holy Thursday is also known as Maundy Thursday after the “new commandment” Jesus gave his disciples in John 13:34 to “love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another.” In Latin, the word for commandment is mandatum, from which we get the short form “maundy.” This commandment is given during the Last Supper.
The priest's vestment color changes to white or gold to honor the Holy Eucharist. The readings for the day this year include the account from John, but also focus on the story of first Passover and Paul’s description of the Last Supper. These stories challenge worshipers to reflect on the “new commandment” and services often include a communion service.
These are the readings for this Maundy Thursday:
Exodus 12:1–8, 11–14
1 Corinthians 11:23–26
John 13:1–15
