Holy Wednesday, or Spy Wednesday, April 16
Judas betrays Jesus, Gustave Dore, Die Heilige Schrift Alten und Neuen Testaments
Holy Wednesday is sometimes called Spy Wednesday because on it Judas Iscariot made a deal with the chief priests to betray Jesus (Matthew 26:14–16 // Mark 14:10–11 // Luke 22:3–6).
“‘What are you willing to give me if I hand him over to you?’ They paid him thirty pieces of silver,
and from that time on he looked for an opportunity to hand him over” (Matthew 26:15–16).
This is the final day priests will purple vestments. As events move toward Jesus’s arrest, trial, and crucifixion, the vestments will change.
These are the readings for this Holy Wednesday:
Isaiah 50:4–9a
Matthew 26:14–25
