Holy Tuesday, April 15
Sermon on the Mount, John Weik
Holy Tuesday continues to commemorate events from Jesus’s final days in and around Jerusalem. This includes a rebuke of the Pharisees (Matthew 23:1–36 // Mark 12:37b–40 // Luke 20:45–47) and an extended sermon delivered on the Mount of Olives (Matthew 24:4–36 // Mark 13:5–37 // Luke 21:8–38). It sometimes also includes the events at Bethany, for which see the entry for Holy Monday. Priests continue to wear purple vestments to symbolize the time of penitence and preparation.
Today’s reading from John describes Jesus’s prediction of Judas’s betrayal: “Amen, amen, I say to you, one of you will betray me.” When questioned who it was, Jesus answered, “It is the one to whom I hand the morsel after I have dipped it.” John 13 (NAB) continues, “So he dipped the morsel and [took it and] handed it to Judas, son of Simon the Iscariot. After he took the morsel, Satan entered him. So Jesus said to him, ‘What you are going to do, do quickly.’” Holy Tuesday is also a time to begin reflecting on Jesus’s suffering, which will culminate in his crucifixion and death.
These are the readings for this Holy Tuesday:
Isaiah 49:1–6
John 13:21–33, 36–38
