The Major and the Missionary: A Friendship in Letters

About the Event

Soon after the death of C. S. Lewis, his brother, Warren, began an extraordinary correspondence with a missionary named Dr. Blanche Biggs. Dr. Biggs was stationed in Papua New Guinea, and she struggled with the relentless challenges of mission life. Major Warren Lewis became her pen pal, her confidant, and her sustaining friend. In 87 letters, they express their views on faith, politics, and the legacy of C. S. Lewis, as well as their personal trials and longings.

In this program, Dr. Diana Glyer will discuss these letters, how they were discovered, and what they have to offer. And we’ll learn about a friendship so remarkable that it inspired a book and a stage play called, The Major & the Missionary.

Lunch & Learn is a free in-person or online program. If you wish to attend Lunch & Learn in person, please remember a museum general admission ticket is required for entry.
