Lunch and Learn: The Wyman Fragment

About the Event

Come hear Daniel Stevens, director of the Scholars Initiative at Museum of the Bible, as he discusses the Wyman Fragment, which is well known for preserving an early copy of the text of Romans 5. What is less known is that the back of this third- or fourth-century parchment leaf is so damaged it has been practically illegible until now. But with modern advances in imaging techniques, we are now able to read some of the text on the back. In this Lunch and Learn, Daniel Stevens will talk about the imaging of this manuscript and the recovery of its lost text, the evidence it shows for multiple scribes working on it, and will reflect on just how much we can learn from a damaged piece of parchment.

Lunch and Learn is a free, virtual and in person program held on the last Wednesday of each month from noon to 1:00 p.m. EST.

Daniel Stevens, Director of the Scholars Initiative

Daniel Stevens is the director of the Scholars Initiative at Museum of the Bible, where he manages ongoing research projects and conducts his own research on areas related to the New Testament and early Christianity.

Daniel holds a PhD from the University of Cambridge, where he wrote his dissertation of the Epistle of the Hebrews, and a BA in classics from the University of California, Los Angeles. Daniel has taught Greek language and literature at the facility of Divinity at Cambridge and has lectured and supervised in most areas related to the New Testament. Since coming to the Museum of the Bible, he has been thrilled to work with manuscripts and on the material culture of early Christianity.
