This summer children all across the country are enjoying, or anticipating, a special week of Vacation Bible School! VBS has come a long way since its early days . . . in a saloon! In the late 1800s, Mrs. Walker Aylette Hawes of the Epiphany Baptist Church became aware of the poor conditions for children in the slums of New York City’s East side and determined to provide the children with a six-week summer Bible school program. The only space she found to rent was a saloon. It was just the beginning! By 2012, when the Barna Group research team surveyed churches, they reported 68 percent of churches across America were conducting VBS programs for children—with memorizing the Bible a key component. Thousands of children engaging with the Bible—in all its impact and influence.
