Mothers: An Important Role in the Bible

Eunice and Lois, Hannah, Rachel, Salome, Bathsheba, Rahab, Rebekah, Jochebed, Sarah, Elisabeth, and Mary—perhaps no more famous mother that ever existed. Beginning with Eve, in Genesis said to be “the mother of all living things,” mothers hold an important role in the Bible. The word “mother” or “mothers” appears in the Bible hundreds of times—even the word “mother-in-law.”

Literally from A to Z—from Abigail to Zipporah—there are more than eighty-four mothers mentioned by name in the Old Testament alone. Likewise there are many in the New Testament—attesting to the importance the Bible places on motherhood. As you engage with the Bible, you'll discover many of the mothers mentioned in the Bible present qualities that all of us, male or female, parent or not, can strive to emulate in a celebration of Mother’s Day!
