Presidential Birthdays

Five former US presidents have birthdays in August, with the oldest being Benjamin Harrison, followed by Herbert Hoover, Lyndon Johnson, Bill Clinton and Barack Obama!

The personal reading copy of Benjamin Harrison’s inaugural address is in the Library of Congress. In it he wrote in pencil, “This is the manuscript used by me in delivering the address March 4, 1889”—his first autograph as president!

But did you know that when taking his oath of office as 23rd President, he placed his hand on the Bible opened to Psalm 121:1–6:“I lift up my eyes to the hills . . . where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the maker of heaven and earth”? Next to the verse he penciled: “My hand was here when the oath was administered.”
