Mortarboards and Messages

In a fast-changing world of both fad and fashion, the timeless “mortarboard” seems to defy both pomp and circumstance, becoming a message board for everything from the more humorous to the most inspiring!

While many grads thanked their families, some opted for something a bit more unique. One West Virginia University’s College of Education grad chose to salute the children’s classic, “The Little Engine That Could!”

And did you know that Bible verses are also popular with grads? Jeremiah 29:11 is a favorite: “I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord.” A University of California forensic science grad’s mortarboard creatively quoted Luke 1:37: “With God nothing is impossible,” and from the same university a mortarboard paraphrased Proverbs 31:25: “And she laughs without fear at the future!”
