Ray Lewis: Baltimore Raven’s Linebacker’s Psalm of Protection

For years Baltimore Raven’s linebacker Ray Lewis was a controversial figure in the NFL, culminating in a murder indictment in 2000 when two men were killed in a fight after a party. Lewis testified against the others involved, took a lesser plea—and began an intense “spiritual renewal” he says turned his life around.

Fast forward to February 3, 2013, Super Bowl XLVII, the Baltimore Ravens vs
the San Francisco 49ers. The trailing 49ers had four chances to score the go-ahead touchdown from the Raven’s 7-yard line, but Baltimore’s defense, led by Ray Lewis, “held strong” and secured a second Super Bowl title!

When Lewis took off his jersey, prominently displayed on his shirt were the words “Psalm 91.” And it’s Psalm 91:16 that Lewis often quotes publicly: “With long life I will satisfy him and show him my salvation.”
