The Closing Ceremony of the Olympic Games

This weekend the closing ceremony takes place at the Games of the Thirty-first Olympiad in Rio de Janeiro.

But bidding for the 2024 Olympics has already begun, and Rome is a strong candidate—with perhaps an unlikely supporter—Pope Francis.
He expressed his support for Rome’s candidacy in a meeting with the leaders and athletes of the Italian National Olympic Committee in 2014, where he also made the connection between the language of the sporting world and spiritual life.

He quotes 1 Timothy 4:8 where PaulPaul speaks of training "in godliness," "for while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come” (NRSV)
