Memorial Day: The Medal of Honor

Memorial Day. A day to honor men and women who died while serving in the US military. Decorated for his military service, Army Chaplain Captain Emil Kapaun died in a Korean Prison Camp—time after time refusing to abandon US soldiers under fire. In a special ceremony in 2013, Father Emil Kapaun was honored posthumously for his service by President Obama. A CNN producer witnessing the medal ceremony wrote: “Captain Emil Kapaun served in World War II and Korea, but he didn’t carry a rifle and never fired a shot. His weapons were a Bible and his faith.” On a monument unveiled in 2014 at Camp Walker in South Korea is an image of Emil Kapaun supporting an injured soldier. The inscription reads, “He paid the ultimate sacrifice and consecrated the soul of Korea.”
