The Mayflower Sets Sail

On this day, September 16, 1620, a merchant ship called the Mayflower set sail from England. Most of the 102 passengers were Pilgrims breaking ties with the Church of England and establishing a colony in the New World. One of the voyagers, who would become the second governor of Plymouth, was William Bradford. Calling to mind the biblical idea of shining light into the darkness, Bradford wrote in his journal, “As one small candle may light a thousand, so the light here kindled hath shone unto many, yea in some sort to our whole nation.” On display at Museum of the Bible is a 1592 Geneva Bible owned by William Bradford. It’s believed this Geneva Bible was brought by the Pilgrims on board the Mayflower.
