Robert Aitken was a well-known printer and the first to print a complete English Bible in America. But did you know it was his daughter, Jane Aitken, who was the first American woman to print the entire Bible? In 1808 after inheriting her father’s business, she printed the Thomson Bible, the first English translation of the Septuagint. She gained a strong reputation for her work. Unfortunately, Jane Aitken also inherited her father’s tremendous debt. She spent time in a debtor’s prison after her business failed and never returned to printing.
