“Fat Tuesday”

“Mardi Gras,” in French, meaning “Fat Tuesday,” has drawn as many as 1.4 million people to the streets of New Orleans!

Lent, a period of forty days, a time of solemn preparation for some Christian traditions, commemorating the forty days and nights that Jesus spent fasting in the Judean Desert, recorded in the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke.

Did you know that around the year 400, Christians began to standardize the selection of Bible passages to be read by churches during different seasons, including Lent?

In the Roman Liturgical Instructions from the medieval era, it noted that during Lent: “the five books of Moses are read, along with Joshua and Judges. . ."
