18th Century Study Bible

“The Blank Bible,” as it became known, is anything but blank! The Blank Bible was Jonathan Edwards’s own eighteenth-century version of a study Bible. He took his Bible, unbound it, and put a blank piece of paper between each of the pages for his notes, then had it all rebound into one new book. Ingenious at a time when study Bibles with wide margins for notes were unheard of.

Jonathan Edwards, a New England Puritan, is credited by some as one of our greatest American scholars—his Blank Bible a treasure for scholars and students today. It’s on display in the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library at Yale University. Create your own blank Bible—or use one of the almost limitless study Bible options available to engage with this Book of books!
