About the Event
Since the settlement of New England, many American Christians have turned to the Bible to help them understand their place in the world. Some concluded that the Western Hemisphere is an “American Israel” that would serve as home for a new chosen people. Others insisted that God’s covenant with the Jewish people remained intact. Many American Christians who held this view became supporters of Zionist movements and, later, the state of Israel. This panel discussion among leading scholars places the controversial phenomenon of “Christian Zionism” in the context of American’s historical fascination with biblical themes of covenant and redemption. Contrary to some depictions, the idea of a special bond between the American and Jewish peoples is not the product of postwar evangelical revival. On the contrary, it derives from the deeply religious sources of American foreign policy.

Samuel Goldman, Ph.D., George Washington University
Samuel Goldman in an assistant professor of political science at George Washington University, where he is also executive director of the John L. Loeb, Jr. Institute for Religious Freedom and director of the Politics & Values Program. His book God’s Country: Christian Zionism in America was published by the University of Pennsylvania Press in 2018.
Gershon Greenberg, Ph.D., American University
Gershon Greenberg is a professor in the department of philosophy and religion at American University. He is the author of three definitive bibliographies of religious thought and the Holocaust, and numerous articles on German-Jewish philosophy, history of Jewish thought in America and religious responses through the Holocaust. He serves as consultant to the International Archives Division of the US Holocaust Memorial Museum.
Michael Doran, Ph.D., Hudson Institute
Michael Doran is a Senior Fellow at the Hudson Institute in Washington, DC, where he specializes in Middle East security issues. In the administration of President George W. Bush, Doran served in the White House as a senior director in the National Security Council with responsibility for the entire Middle East except Iraq.
